Boyd leaves Nashville after two seasons

NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC have waived forward Tyler Boyd, the club announced on Thursday.

Boyd, 31, was acquired from the LA Galaxy ahead of the 2024 MLS season for up to $775,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM), signing a new contract through the 2026 season with an option for 2027, with Boyd's earnings falling in the Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) range.

A crucial part of Nashville's attack for the first half of 2024, Boyd suffered a catastrophic knee injury, tearing his ACL in a non-contact injury just two games before BJ Callaghan took over as head coach. The injury kept him out for over 400 days, returning late in 2025 to make six appearances in all competitions.

The highest-paid non-Designated Player on Nashville's roster, Boyd was a sizable hit on Nashville's cap. With the incoming addition of Cristian Espinoza, as well as young attackers like Ahmed Qasem, Jonny Pérez and Warren Madrigal, Nashville have plenty of options out wide, and the path to playing time isn't clear for Boyd.

It's a disappointing and incredibly unlucky end to Boyd's time in Nashville. Any other MLS club can claim him on waivers for the next 48 hours, which would include assuming his existing contract. If no team claims him with those 48 hours, Boyd is free to sign with whomever he chooses.

If Boyd clears waivers, Nashville will continue to have his salary count against their budget charge. In such a scenario, Boyd would likely have his contract bought out to remove him from Nashville's budget charge, which is what they did with Randall Leal after waiving him last season.
