Nashville SC's Supporters' Shield-winning 2026 campaign will go down as one of the best regular seasons in Major League Soccer history. It will also be long remembered as one of the best sports moments in Music City.

With 70 points from 31 matches, Nashville are the class of MLS. They've given the entire city something to celebrate.

"It's a huge step forward for the club and for the city, and the connection that we have with the supporters. That's the name of the trophy, right?" head coach BJ Callaghan said after a decisive 2-0 win over CF Montréal. "It's a testament to the work that's been done, leading with owner John Ingram's vision, and the day-to-day process that we continue to abide by... It validates that the work that we're doing is good work."

Nashville have been dominant in MLS this season. They've racked up 21 wins so far, four more than the closest team. They've lost just three games, three fewer than the next team. They've outscored their opponents by 43 goals this year, and haven't dropped out of first place in the table since May. With three games left to play, they're just five points away from setting the all-time points record.

"This shield for us is symbolic of the body of work that we've had this year, being really, really consistent, and we'll enjoy it tonight," Callaghan told Apple TV's Callen Carr. "We are a team that wants to compete for trophies. We know that we have to do it the right way, step by step, uh, put the work in each and every single day. And we're aligned from top to bottom on how we want to do it... We're being rewarded for."

A team that represents Nashville

Throughout his tenure, Callaghan has preached being a team that represents Nashville; the real Nashville, and all of Nashville.

In a lot of ways, it's fitting that Nashville's best season is marked by earning a trophy created, built, and owned by supporters. Nashville SC won't hold onto the Shield for the next year; their fans will. It only strengthens Nashville's uniquely tight bond between fans and players.

"Our profession is built around the support of people coming out and giving us their time. The least that we can do is give them performances that they can be proud of," said Callaghan. "The way we play, the way we go about our business is uniquely Nashville. That's been from day one; having a strong connection to that fan base. And tonight, as much as we're celebrating – I know it's an away game – we're celebrating for all of them. I know when we get back to Nashville, we'll have time to make that connection to all the people that have been supporting us for many years."

While the Supporters' Shield winner would be the league champion in almost any league around the world, that's not how MLS works. The MLS Cup Playoffs are set to start in a few weeks, and while Nashville will be among the favorites and will hold home-field advantage throughout the tournament, nothing is a given.

In MLS's 30 prior seasons, only eight Supporters' Shield winners have gone on to win MLS Cup. The last to do the double was Los Angeles FC in 2022.

"I think for one, two weeks we can be European, celebrate the championship," laughed captain Hany Mukhtar. "But then we have to get back to how the system is here, the playoffs and all that. We need to be ready. We know that it's a new season in the playoffs, and we will make sure that we are all ready."

Nashville have never made it farther than the Eastern Conference semifinals, falling to Columbus Crew in extra time in their inaugural 2020 campaign and losing in a penalty-kick shootout to Philadelphia Union in 2021.

After one of the best regular-season performances in league history, with one of the most balanced squads in MLS, and with one of the fiercest home atmospheres in North America, Nashville are hoping 2026 will be different.

"We are ready for more," said Mukhtar.
