Club América snapshot

Founded in 1916, Club América are the fourth-oldest club in Mexico. They're also the most popular. A 2025 survey from MITOFSKY claimed América as the most supported team in Mexico, with 21% of fans supporting the Mexico City club. They're also the most hated, with 46% picking América as their least favorite side.

After head coach André Jardine took over in 2023, América became the most dominant side in Liga MX, winning three consecutive league titles and six trophies in two years. The Brazilian manager turned a sleeping giant into a well-oiled machine by finding a perfect balance between possession-based buildup and defensive pragmatism. They're tactically flexible, often shifting shapes during the match and dropping a midfielder deep to form a five-man backline in buildup.

The current version is mid-rebuild. Álvaro Fidalgo, the Spanish-born midfielder who was the creative brain of the tricampeonato era, departed for Real Betis this winter, and his absence has been felt. Raphael Veiga was brought in on loan from Palmeiras. He hasn't fully clicked yet, struggling to sync with teammates in the final third. While he's still adapting, he's clearly capable of being an elite creator, with two goal involvements so far in three CCC appearances.

América's remains genuinely scary. Former LAFC winger Brian Rodríguez is in the best form of his life, leading América in Clausura scoring with three goals and scored seven times in the Apertura. In all, he's scored 13 and assisted 10 in the 2025-26 season. US international Álejandro Zendejas provides pace and creativity from wide positions that can shred a high defensive line, cutting inside onto his favored left foot to combine in and around the box. He's bagged nine goals and five assists since the start of the 2025 Apertura.

América have had a lot of movement up top. Henry Martín, the club captain, is returning to form after a long injury layoff. He's a nightmare to mark and a reliable finisher when service finds him, with 117 goals in 312 appearances for Las Aguilas. He last played in mid-February, though, and while he's been involved in training recently, may not be ready to play against Nashville. In his absence, expect to see either 31-year-old Colombian veteran Raúl Zúñiga or 22-year-old breakout Patricio Salas lead the line.

Luis Malagón, one of the best goalkeepers in Concacaf and the presumed starter for Mexico this summer, ruptured his Achilles in the first leg of their Round of 16 series win over the Philadelphia Union. He's out for several months and will miss the World Cup. Rodolfo Cota is an experienced backup, but a meaningful step down in quality. He's bolstered by an elite backline, including Mexico internationals Israel Reyes and Kevin Álvarez, as well as Uruguayan international Sebastián Cáceres. Player for player, this is one of the most talent-rich sides Nashville have ever played

What makes this matchup compelling is that América have been inconsistent in Liga MX — losses to Pumas, Tigres, and Juárez in their last five — but have emphasized Champions Cup. Jardine is openly managing the squad with this tournament as the priority, resting legs in league play to arrive sharp here. They beat Philadelphia Union in the Round of 16, with Veiga scoring in the away leg.

While they know how to get results in Concacaf, there are questions about their form. They had to grind out a result against a Union side who aren't just winless in MLS, but look like one of the worst sides in the league. They had to hold on through a Union onslaught in the second leg, managing to squeeze out a 2-1 aggregate win that never looked comfortable. Against a much better Nashville side, how will they fare?

Nashville haven't lost to Club América in two prior meetings, both decided by penalty shootout (one of those was in the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase, a friendly and not an official competition). The 2023 Leagues Cup meeting was one of the most memorable nights in club history, with Nashville pulling out a result in penalties after a wild 2-2 draw with two goals in second-half stoppage time, and a shootout interrupted by a lengthy video review and non-stop pitch invasions, resulting in 18 América fans being detained by Metro Nashville Police.

This is a different competition and a different format. América have seven Concacaf Champions Cup titles and 81 consecutive years in Mexico's top flight.

This tournament is their priority. If Nashville let them find their footing at Geoidis Park, they'll have a mountain to climb in the return leg in Mexico City next weekend.

Neither team will get a result in this series without earning it in Leg 1.

Nashville SC snapshot

Nashville SC are no longer unbeaten in 2026, losing 1-0 on the road to the Chicago Fire last weekend. Head coach BJ Callaghan opted not to rotate his squad after the international break, playing a first-choice group in Chicago. He's confirmed that the squad came out of the match with no new injury concerns, and at this point in the season, it shouldn't be an issue for the 'Yotes to put in a high-energy 90-minute performance.

Chicago match aside, Nashville are playing the best soccer in the Eastern Conference, and some of the best soccer in MLS. With their attacking trio of Cristian Espinoza, Hany Mukhtar, and Sam Surridge, they have a frontline that can arguably compete with any team in North America, while their industrious midfield and rock-solid backline is quietly one of the best in MLS.

This is one of – maybe the – biggest matches in club history. A strong performance and a result in the first leg will give Nashville a huge boost in the second, where they'll likely play in Mexico's famed Aztexa stadium (which has been closed for World Cup renovations), one of the most difficult places to earn a result in the Western Hemisphere.

Tonight's result is crucial.
