Trinidad & Tobago snapshot

Trinidad & Tobago head into the tournament looking to get out of the group for the first time since 2015. Their best-ever finish came all the way back in 1973, finishing second in the tournament. Since the 2000s, though, they've found themselves towards the bottom of the Concacaf pecking order.

They're lead by manager Dwight Yorke. A prolific striker for the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa in his playing days, Yorke has only won two of six matches in charge of the Socca Warriors, but has them in second place in their World Cup qualification group.

Like many of the smaller teams in this tournament, they'll be looking to use this tournament as a springboard towards qualifying for the World Cup next summer. Often using a back five under Yorke, they'll look to play direct and utilize the pace of their wingbacks, CF Montréal's Dante Sealy and Toronto FC's Tyrese Spicer, to get behind the USMNT's defense and find Levi Garcia and Isaiah Lee in the box. Pulling the strings in midfield is former Minnesota United star Kevin Molino. The fifth-leading goalscorer in Trinidad history, Molino has rediscovered his form with a return to Trinidad's top division, and remains a crucial part of this team at 34 years old.

The numbers

FIFA World Ranking: 16th
Key Players: Tyler Adams (Bournemouth), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), Malik Tillman (PSV), Matt Turner (Crystal Palace)
Last match: 4-0 loss vs Switzerland

United States snapshot

The USMNT were disastrous against Switzerland. Their roster was already thinned, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino rotated heavily against a top European side, but even then the result was unacceptable. Now, the United States are a year out from hosting a World Cup on home soil, and find themselves at a low point.

USMNT Player Ratings: Did anyone play well in a 4-0 loss to Switzerland?
Taking stock of a disheartening performance in Nashville before kicking off the Gold Cup

With no competitive matches left to play after this Gold Cup, the USMNT badly need a deep run in the tournament to restore some confidence, but with a much weaker roster than other favorites like Mexico, Canada and even Panama have brought, they're looking at something of an uphill battle.

Tyler Adams is expected to miss out with a foot issue, leaving Johnny Cardoso and Luca de la Torre as the first-choice options in midfield. It's hard to say that anyone who started against Switzerland made a strong case for a larger role, but substitute center back Tim Ream calmed everything down, and in a match where the US should dominate the ball, his quality in possession looks like an asset.

In attack, returning to the group that played against Türkiye makes sense. There won't be a ton of space in behind to exploit, but getting the trio of Diego Luna, Malik Tillman and Jack McGlynn on the ball and in combination seems like the best bet to find cracks in a packed defense.

Trinidad are a difficult team to play against, but even with a less-than-first-choice squad, this USMNT side still has enough quality to break them down.

Prediction

Score: USA 3-1 TRI
Scorers: Diego Luna, Malik Tillman, Chris Richards
MOTM: Malik Tillman
Prediction: The USA still have a lot of quality in this roster, enough that they should be able to take down Trinidad without too much trouble. Luna and Tillman's ability to find space in the final third will be absolutely crucial.
