Ranking every match of the 2026 World Cup knockout rounds

The 2026 World Cup group stage is officially over, and all 104 matches are in the history books.

Here at SixOneFive Soccer, we're ranking every match of the knockout rounds. What's our methodology, you ask? It's an explicitly scientific method based on vibes and feelings as we descend slowly into madness after watching over 10,000 minutes of soccer in five weeks.

1 – Argentina 3-2 Cape Verde (Round of 32)

This was truly one of the all-time great World Cup games. Two hours of end to end football, with Sidny Lopes Cabral scoring one of the greatest goals you'll see at any level. This is a match you'll tell your grandkids about.

2 – Mexico 2-3 England (Round of 16)

England's Quarterfinal win over Mexico at the Azteca was everything it was billed to be. Jude Bellingham stole the show with a brace, and the Three Lions gutted out the victory against a resolute El Tri side, despite playing the final fourty minutes down a man after Jarrell Quansah's 54th-minute red card

3 – Portugal 2-1 Croatia (Round of 32)

Two icons of the game in Cristiano Ronaldo and Luca Modrić faced off for what could be the last time, and the result didn't disappoint. It was also marred in controversy, with what looked like a last-second equalizer for Croatia in the 13th minute of stoppage time ruled off due to a phantom touch that caused Josko Gvardiol to be offside.

4 – France 4-6 England (Third Place)

This was an all-timer built on nothing but vibes and non-existant defending. The 6-4 scoreline was the first such scoreline in history.

The fact that it happened in a meaningless third place match drops it down the rankings slightly, but it was still box-office entertainment.

5 – Belgium 3-2 Senegal (Round of 32)

Belgium looked dead and buried for 85 minutes against Senegal, scoring in the 85th and 89th minutes to send the match to extra time against the run of play. Youri Tielemans scored a controversial penalty kick in the 125th minute to avoid penalties and send Belgium through to the Round of 16.

6 – Brazil 1-2 Norway (Round of 16)

Brazil crashed out in the Round of 16 against an upstart Norway side, with Erling Haaland scoring a brace to cap off an incredible World Cup debut. Neymar scored a late consolation penalty kick, celebrating like he'd won the World Cup before collapsing in tears seconds later after the final whistle.

7 – Argentina 3-2 Egypt (Round of 16)

Once again, Argentina left it late and survived. The reigning champions were down 2-0 in the 79th minute, with Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernández scoring in the final minutes to complete the comeback.

8 – England 1-2 Argentina (Semifinal)

Once again, Argentina survived, booking their place in a second-straight World Cup final with a late comeback, scoring twice in the final five minutes to take down England. Lionel Messi's winning assist to Lautaro Martínez was one of the moments of the tournament.

9 – Argentina 3-1 Switzerland (Quarterfinals)

Julian Álvarez scored one of the goals of the tournament to send Argentina past Switzerland in extra time, yet another late comeback for the reigning champions.

10 – Spain 2-1 Belgium (Quarterfinals)

Belgium pushed Spain harder than any team in the knockout rounds, with La Furia Roja requiring an 88th-minute winner from Mikel Merino to book a spot in the semifinals. The goal, though, was quality.

11 – Netherlands 1 (2) - 1 (3) Morocco (Round of 32)

Issa Diop scored a memorable 91st-minute equalizer to send this match to penalties, and the 2022 semifinalists prevailed in one of the most mouthwatering matchups of the Round of 32.

12 – Portugal 0-1 Spain (Round of 16)

Spain got another last-minute winner from Mikel Merino, taking down Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in an Iberian Peninsula rivalry clash.

13 – Brazil 2-1 Japan (Round of 32)

Gabriel Martinelli scored a 95th-minute winner to pull Brazil back from 1-0 down, sneaking past a Japan team who looked like one of the better sides at the tournament. It's a shame this matchup happened so early in the tournament.

14 – England 2 - 1 DR Congo (Round of 32)

Harry Kane bagged a late brace to pull England back from behind, squeezing past a resolute DR Congo side in Atlanta.

15 – Germany 1 (3) - 1 (4) Paraguay (Round of 32)

Paraguay stunned the football world, sending Germany crashing out of the tournament in the Round of 32 after a six-round penalty shootout.

16 – Ivory Coast 1-2 Norway (Round of 32)

Erling Haaland was once again the hero for Norway, scoring an 86th-minute winner to get past an Ivory Coast team who really impressed in the group stages.

17 – Australia 1 (2) - 1 (4) Egypt (Round of 32)

It was a valiant effort from the Socceroos, who put Egypt under intense pressure over 120 minutes before falling in a penalty shootout.

18 – Norway 1-2 England (Quarterfinals)

It was another heroic showing from Jude Bellingham, who equalized in the first half before scoring the winner shortly into extra time to send England through to the semifinals.

19 – France 0-2 Spain (Semifinals)

Spain put on a defensive masterclass, neutralizing a seemingly unstoppable France attack en route to their first World Cup final since 2010.

20 – United States 2-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina (Round of 32)

The United States hung on against Bosnia & Herzegovina for their first World Cup knockout round win since 2002, with Malik Tillman's late free kick sealing a dramatic win after Folarin Balogun's 64th-minute red card.

21 – Spain 3-0 Austria (Round of 32)

Spain didn't look particularly troubled in their first game of the knockout rounds, possessing 64% of the ball and outshooting Austria 23-5. Mikel Oyarzabal bagged a brace in a thoroughly professional performance.

22 – Mexico 2-0 Ecuador (Round of 32)

El Tri exploded past Ecuador in front of a raucous Azteca crowd. In all honesty, this game wasn't nearly as close as the scoreline indicated.

23 – France 3-0 Sweden (Round of 32)

Kylian Mbappé scored a brace as Les Bleus cruised past Sweden in their knockout-round opener.

24 – France 2-0 Morocco (Round of 32)

This match should have been one of the best of the tournament, and the fact that it was such a lopsided win for France is a testament to their quality. Morocco only put one of their five shots on target, whereas France could have scored significantly more than their two goals.

25 – Switzerland 2-0 Algeria (Round of 32)

This was a stereotypically Swiss performance, handling business without fuss against Algeria.

26 – Colombia 1-0 Ghana (Round of 32)

Colombia took the lead in the 14th minute, and Ghana never once looked like euqalizing. The Black Stars were outshot 20-8, and never got a foothold in their Round of 32 exit.

27 – Canada 0-3 Morocco (Round of 16)

Canada were certainly better than the scoreline in their Round of 16 exit to Morocco, with the winners scoring two goals late to ice the result. It was a disappointing end to the tournament for the Canadians, who can hold their heads high after a strong showing.

28 – Canada 1-0 South Africa (Round of 32)

Credit to Canada for the knockout round win, but this was one of the dullest matches of the tournament. The two sides combined for just 18 shots, with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a 92nd-minute winner.

29 – Paraguay 0-1 France (Round of 16)

Paraguay had no interest in actually playing soccer, and the soccer gods (and France) punished them.

30 – Switzerland 0 (4)-0 (3) Colombia (Round of 16)

In a 180º turn from their group stage performance, Colombia looked toothless. The two sides combined for just five total shots, mercifully coming to an end in penalties.

31 – Spain 1-0 Argentina (Final)

The final unfortunately disappointed. Argentina didn't manage a single shot in the 90 minutes of regulation time, bunkering in after Enzo Fernández's second-half red card. Ferran Torres scored the winner in extra time, giving Spain their first World Cup win since 2010. The result was deserved, but the match itself was one to forget.

32 – United States 1-4 Belgium (Round of 16)

Let's just agree to not talk about this one...
