Recap: Nashville SC breeze past Sporting KC in one-sided contest

Nashville SC tie the MLS single-season record for home wins with 14th victory at Geodis Park

NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC continued their electric 2026 campaign, rolling to a 4–0 win over Sporting Kansas City at Geodis Park. The win puts them a single result away from clinching the Supporters' Shield and ties the all-time MLS record for home wins in a single season with 14.

The vibe check (TL;DR)

  • What happened: Nashville dominated the match from the opening whistle, and never truly had to get out of third gear. By halftime, the result was all but secured, and head coach BJ Callaghan was able to rotate some of his key players ahead of a lengthy road trip to the West Coast.
  • What we learned: Not much, really. Nashville SC are elite. Sporting KC are... not. By the time the match ended, Nashville were 44 points ahead of them in the table.
  • Big picture: Nashville will clinch the Supporters' Shield with a win on Saturday. They could do it with a draw, or a loss. They have five games to get nine points and break the single-season points record. Enjoy this team. Seasons like this don't come around often.

Key moments

  • 10' | Hany Mukhtar opens the scoring with a golazo, rising for an Andy Nájar cross and hitting a sideways bicycle kick into the net.
  • 12' | Sporting nearly equalize through André Luiz. The Brazilian attacker gets in behind Nashville's backline and fires a shot just past the post.
  • 17' | Nashville quickly double the lead, with Mukhtar picking out Sam Surridge for an easy close-range finish.
  • 19' | It's nearly a brace for Surridge, who forces 'keeper Stefan Cleveland into an eye-catching save with a bullet header.
  • 25' | Nearly a brace again for Surridge, played behind the backline, but smashing his shot right at Cleveland. Seconds later, Cristian Espinoza finds Mukhtar on top of the box, but he can't get the ball out from under him and sees his shot saved.
  • 29' | Nájar gets in on the fun, heading home a corner from Espinoza for his second goal of the year.
  • 36' | Elias Saad plays a gorgeous little slip pass into the box for Mukhtar, who rushes his shot and sees it saved.
  • 40' | It should have been a fourth for Nashville after more excellent work from Saad. He dribbles past four Sporting defenders and plays Espinoza in on goal, but he puts his shot well over the bar.
  • 59' | Matt Corcoran plays a gorgeous defense-splitting ball in behind for Mukhtar, but he's just a step offside.
  • 64' | Nashville look to add a fourth after Saad dances past a handful of defenders and chips a cross to the back post for Surridge to head in virtually on the goal line. After review, it's pulled back for a handball.
  • 72' | It's a disastrous giveaway from Cleveland, who passes the ball straight to Mukhtar. He picks out Surridge in front of an open goal, but his shot is from a tight angle and gets blocked out for a corner by a defender. Referee Joshua Encarnacion ignores Surridge's ardent pleas for a penalty.
  • 89' | More flashy footwork from Saad ends with a left-footed blast, destined for the top corner before Cleveland tips it over the bar.
  • 90+3' | Substitute Warren Madrigal smashes a shot off of Jansen Miller's arm, and the referee points to the spot after video review.
  • 90+5' | Madrigal rockets the spot kick in. The game was over 80-plus minutes ago, but it's always good to make sure.

Standout performers

  • Hany Mukhtar continues his MVP-caliber form. He's up to 15 goals and eight assists in the regular season, with 12 of those coming after the World Cup break. He tore Sporting's defense apart on multiple occasions, and should have had another goal involvement or two.
  • Elias Saad continues to be lethal down the left flank. He danced past Sporting defenders on multiple occasions and delivered some exceptional service into the box, deserving to end up with a handful of assists on the night.
  • Reed Baker-Whiting has improved exponentially since the World Cup break. He's a constant threat on the flank, able to hug the touchline and provide width or pinch inside and crash the box.

Lineup notes

Head coach BJ Callaghan made just one change to the lineup that beat Austin FC 4–1 last weekend, bringing in midfielder Eddi Tagseth in place of Patrick Yazbek.

What it means

With the win and Vancouver Whitecaps' 0–0 draw with St. Louis City, Nashville head to San Jose just three points away from officially locking down the Supporters' Shield (they could also win with a draw... or even a loss, depending on other results).

Nashville also tie the MLS all-time record for home wins in a season, notching their 14th win in 15 league matches at Geodis Park.

Up next

Nashville have a weekend road trip to the West Coast, taking on San Jose Earthquakes knowing that a win will officially lock down the Supporters' Shield
