NASHVILLE, TN – The United States Women's National Team started their SheBelieves Cup campaign with a 2-0 over Argentina at Geodis Park. The USWNT were largely unbothered by Argentina and showcased why they are a powerhouse in the sport.

This is the 11th iteration of the friendly tournament; the US has won seven of the previous 10. This is also the fourth time Nashville have hosted SheBelieves Cup, and the second time at Geodis Park.

Game notes

The first half played out a bit differently than most expected, with Argentina presenting some interesting challenges to the four-time world champions. That said, the US still had the bulk of possession and seemed mostly comfortable.

The moment of the half came in the 20th minute when Emma Sears broke into the Argentina box from the right and crossed the ball. Lindsey Heaps met it at the edge of the box and slotted it in for the opener.

Things got a bit chippier for the rest of the half, with 14 total fouls split evenly. Also, Argentine defender Sofía Domínguez picking up a yellow card. The US seemed otherwise comfortable in possession and playing out of the back, despite Argentina's press.

In the second half, it was more of the same. Argentina had their first shot on target via Maria Bonsegundo, but it was easily saved by Claudia Dickey, otherwise the US assumed control.

The breakthrough came when Jaedyn Shaw found the back of the net from the edge of the box. The Argentine goalkeeper miscalculated her timing, gifting the US a goal.

The rest of the half was uneventful, and chances were limited for both teams. The US continued their ball dominance and killed the game off as Argentina grew frustrated.

The game ended on a sour note as superstar Trinity Rodman seemed to have picked up an injury after a hard challenge. She was able to stand up on her own and receive treatment, but the game ended before she was able to return to the pitch.

Lineup notes

Head coach Emma Heyes opted to give some newer faces in the camp a chance. This was only the third cap for forwards Maddie Dahlien and Jameese Joseph. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey was also given the start alongside defenders Kennedy Wesley and Gisele Thompson, all of whom have fewer than eight caps with the national team, respectively.

There were still some familiar faces in the starting lineup, like captain Heaps and winger Jaedyn Shaw.

What it means

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a routine win for the USWNT. That said, this game provided some valuable experience for multiple new players who are still getting accustomed to the national team.

The game also allowed Hayes to test out different combinations of personnel across the pitch. Chances are, the experiments will continue throughout the tournament.

Up next

The USWNT will play two more games in the SheBelieves Cup. They will take on Canada on Wednesday, March 4, at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus. Then on Saturday, March 7, they'll face Colombia at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey.
