NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC made a deadline day move on Wednesday night, trading midfielder Ján Greguš to Minnesota United for $75,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money and Minnesota’s natural second round draft pick in 2024.
Greguš, 32, joined Nashville as a free agent on a one-year contract in March. The MLS veteran had been a Designated Player in a prior stint with Minnesota, and was seen as a valuable depth addition who could potentially break into the starting group.
That never quite materialized, as he made just one start in MLS play, in addition to starting all three of Nashville’s U.S. Open Cup matches. However, Greguš was a regular off the bench, making 15 substitute appearances and named in every match day squad since his arrival. While he wasn’t a season-changing option, he was certainly a valuable depth piece.
From a pure roster-building perspective, flipping a free agent signing for GAM is a good deal. But in the larger picture, with an already one-dimensional midfield, it’s hard to see how trading Greguš helps the team this season, unless Nashville have a last minute addition in the works.
