Tonight is the biggest match in the history of the US Men's National Team.

In Seattle, they'll take on Belgium in a Round of 16 matchup, looking to lock down a match against Spain or Portugal in the Quarterfinals.

Here are three keys we're watching in this match.

How much does the Balogun controversy impact the match?

Unfortunately, the prevailing story heading into the match has been one of controversy. Striker Folarin Balogun, controversially sent off in their Round of 32 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, saw his red card suspension suspended (i.e., delayed until an unspecified point in the future) thanks to an obscure article in FIFA's regulations.

FIFA has handed him a suspended one-match ban, to be served after the 2026 World Cup

The decision would be incredibly controversial on its own. Reports that US president Donald Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to inquire into the suspension and request it be lifted – as well as other US government officials involved in a legal challenge to overturn the suspension – drag the entire match into sideshow territory.

Belgium protested the decision and tried to file an appeal, which FIFA has denied. Most recently, they've published a statement hinting at a potential for further legal action.

To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player's eligibility for the upcoming match.

Regardless of the sporting outcome of this match, the RBFA is deeply concerned by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months in defence of the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the interests of football as a whole.

All of this has distracted from what is the biggest match in USMNT history, and a match that they have a real shot at winning – with or without Balogun.

Belgium have struggled to fully convince at this tournament. They drew with Egypt and Iran during group play, and came back from a 2-0 deficit to Senegal in the last five minutes of their Round of 32 meeting to send the match to extra time, eventually winning via a controversial penalty kick in the dying seconds.

If the United States play Balogun and win, the rest of the world will view this result with an asterisk, and rightly so. If they don't play him (which, to be clear, any other team would), they'll be without their best player against the best team they've faced to date.

That's not even factoring in the off-field distraction this has become over the last 24 hours, which has surely been at least tangentially felt inside the locker room. Can the team on the field shut out the noise and focus on football?

Can Alex Freeman handle Jeremy Doku?

Christina Moore-SixOneFive Soccer

This may not be the Belgian golden generation, but this is a roster still loaded with elite players. None are more dangerous than Jeremy Doku. The Manchester City winger is one of the most dangerous dribblers in the modern game, an absolute menace when he's able to isolate his defender in a 1v1 situation and put him on the back foot.

They're also left side dominant, matching up against a sturdier flank with Freeman and Richards as well as Dest being a general pest. Adams will have to do a bit more shading towards that side as Maxim De Cuyper is one of the better left backs in the tournament, but it is a good matchup.

He'll be going up against 21-year-old defender Alex Freeman, who's had a meteoric rise in the last 18 months from the Orlando City academy to a nailed-on starter on the right side of defense.

Freeman has plenty of pace to hang with Doku in a foot race, but can he avoid getting drawn into 1v1 situations? He'll need help from Tyler Adams and Chris Richards to make sure he's not consistently isolated, but he'll also need to have his best defensive performance yet in a United States shirt to keep Doku from doing damage.

Is this the moment soccer goes mainstream?

The vibes at USMNT games have been unmatched at this tournament. Seattle has shone as one of the best soccer atmospheres on the planet. That support doesn't show up on the stats sheet, but it makes a real impact on the players. In a match like this, against such a difficult opponent, it can certainly give players an extra 10% energy boost.

The match against Bosnia already set TV records for an English-language soccer telecast, with nearly 30 million tuning in across all platforms. Tonight's match will certainly break those records.

Add to the mix the Balogun saga penetrating the mainstream news cycle, and we're looking at an unprecedented audience for a United States World Cup match.

The question now is if they'll stick around. Beating Belgium tonight would go a long way towards ensuring they do.
