On Saturday, Nashville SC and Inter Miami CF face off in one of the biggest regular-season clashes in recent memory.
Nashville lead the MLS table with 40 points from their first 18 matches, while Miami are in second on 38 points. The top two sides in the Eastern Conference, Miami and Nashville are widely viewed as the favorites to win the Supporters' Shield, the trophy given to the team with the best regular-season record.
Additionally, Nashville and Miami have extensive history. Both entered MLS as expansion teams in 2020, and the two sides have played each other 21 times in the following seven seasons, including the 2023 Leagues Cup final, the 2020 and 2025 MLS Playoffs, and the 2024 and 2026 Concacaf Champions League.

Miami failed to make it out of Leauges Cup Phase One, losing to Club León
and CF Monterrey after a dominant opening win over Atlético San Luis, ironically managing the exact same results as Nashville.
Lionel Messi came off the bench against León after losing his father, Jorge, earlier in the week. Messi penned a heartfelt message to his father on Instagram, raising doubts about his future in the game.
"I wanted to win [the World Cup] to bring to you and show you a new one. I couldn’t, my legs couldn’t go any further. This time I tried to go against my body, but I couldn’t. I never managed to feel well," he said. "I don’t know what I’m going to do without you, I don’t know how to go on. I only played football and now I have quite a few doubts about whether I’ll keep doing it for much longer. You were by my side from the beginning, there was so little left until the end. Why couldn’t you hold on just a little longer and we could have finished together?"
It's a devastating personal loss for Messi and his family, and is obviously more important than sport. On the pitch, though, it will likely produce an even more motivated Messi than normal.
Messi has 19 goal contributions in 2026, just one behind FC Cincinnati's Evander for the league lead. And while he's the best player of all time and dominates the conversation around this team, they're so much more than just Messi. The addition of Real Madrid and Brazil midfielder Casemiro has given them an orchestrator in midfield, freeing Rodrigo De Paul to play further forward and adding more balance to their side.
"The tactical intelligence and understanding brought by Casemiro means they can frequently rotate roles in their posture to mix things up and keep their opponents guessing," Edward Stratmann wrote in his tactical preview.

Miami come to Geodis Park in excellent form, with four wins and a draw in their last five matches. They're on pace to finish the year with 70 points and a league-leading 85 goals, and know that they'll need to take points off of Nashville to pass them in the Supporters' Shield table.
This isn't a must-win match for Miami in the strictest technical sense, but it's close.
One other element to watch is the heat, which will be absolutely brutal for both sides. Heat index values on Saturday will reach as high as 110°, posing a safety risk to players in addition to making it almost impossible to play 90 minutes at high intensity. It's impossible for the heat to not have some impact on the on-field product.

Nashville's Leagues Cup run ended in the group stage, and that may not be the worst thing for them. They're already slated to play eight matches in the month of August; a trip to the Quarterfinals would add a ninth, an incredibly packed schedule for a team that is just now starting to return to full health after the World Cup break.
Head coach BJ Callaghan seemed content with the objectives they achieved during their three matches; regaining some health and match sharpness, integrating new signings, and testing their depth. The squad is healthy, and their 4-1 win over San Luis gave fans a glimpse of what the first-choice group could look like together.
Callaghan's biggest question will be how to fit his attackers on the pitch together. Elias Saad was excellent, if inconsistent, in his first few outings in gold. He looks primarily set to play on the left side of attack, a role that Alex Muyl or Ahmed Qasem has mostly filled this season. Qasem and Muyl have had a hybrid role, though, pinching inside at times to form more of a 4-3-3. When asked about it, Callaghan didn't seem concerned.
"I think for Elias and Hany, the whole idea is how many more players we can get in between the lines to find space between the midfield and the backline of the opponent," he said. "I think both those guys can operate really effectively there, and then Elias has the ability as we get closer to goal, to go 1v1... we'll continue to build that as an element to make sure that we find that for him."
Nashville have been adamant that they won't change how they play for any opponent, and their success against Miami earlier the year in Concacaf Champions Cup should give them confidence at Geodis Park. Three points will be crucial to extend their lead over Miami and keep the top spot in the Supporters' Shield race.
These two teams will meet again in Miami on September 12. Both of these matches will be six-pointers and appointment viewing.
