San Jose snapshot

It's been an up-and-down season for the 'Quakes, but life after the World Cup break has been better for San Jose. They've climbed to fourth place in the Western Conference, thanks in large part to a stellar record on the road, with only Inter Miami earning more than their 26 points away from home.

Under head coach Bruce Arena, they've developed an unsurprisingly domestic-heavy base, with younger defenders like Reid Roberts and Max Floriani turning into key starters on the ninth-best backline in MLS.

Unfortunately, they've dealt with seemingly unending injuries this season. Nico Tsakiris, one of the best No. 10s in MLS, has only made 19 appearances this season and hasn't played since September 19. Forward Timo Werner has also been in and out of the squad, making his 17th appearance of the year off the bench in Wednesday's 1–1 draw at Real Salt Lake.

San Jose come into the match on an eight-game unbeaten run, with their last loss coming back on August 29. Only three of those matches were played at PayPal Park, and they won two.

Under Arena, they're a very transition-heavy team, sitting fairly deep in defense and looking to play quickly and directly forward. While Tsakiris is a major asset in that department with his ability to play defense-splitting passes, Eduard Löwen (acquired from St. Louis in the summer window) has been able to handle a lot of the playmaking duties, while his midfield partner Beau LeRoux is one of the more underrated players in MLS.

San Jose aren't one of the elite teams in the Western Conference, but they're a difficult team to play against and in the best form of their season. Combine that with a four-and-a-half-hour flight to the opposite side of the country, and it's one of the more difficult road trips on the calendar for Nashville.

Nashville SC snapshot

After Wednesday's win over Sporting KC, Nashville head to San Jose needing just a single result to lock down the Supporters' Shield, the top spot in the Eastern Conference, and home field advantage throughout the postseason. Since they can't finish lower than third place in the Supporters' Shield standings, they've also clinched their spot in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Saturday also marks Cristian Espinoza's return to San Jose. The winger played for the 'Quakes for seven seasons, logging 38 goals and 85 assists and making his mark as one of the league's premier attackers. During that stretch, he led MLS in assists, with only Hany Mukhtar, Carles Gil, and Luciano Acosta logging more direct goal contributions than him.

Report: Nashville SC sign free agent attacker Cristian Espinoza
The Argentine attacker should instantly elevate Nashville's attack into one of the best in MLS

While this is a difficult logistical trip for Nashville, they had the luxury of rotating players during their midweek win. Up 3-0 inside 30 minutes, head coach BJ Callaghan made more conservative changes than usual, taking off Mukhtar, Espinoza, Sam Surridge, and Andy Nájar, while also giving Patrick Yazbek the full night off. All signs indicate a fully first-choice squad in San Jose, although Elias Saad could start from the bench after playing the full 90 for just the third time in his Nashville career.

Nashville are the fourth-best road team in MLS, averaging 1.64 points per game. San Jose, meanwhile, have only averaged 1.50 points per game at home, the 20th-worst mark in the league. If Nashville maintain their level from their last two outings, there's a win to be had.
