Recap: Nashville SC clinch playoff spot with dominant win over Chicago

NASHVILLE, TN – Nashville SC booked their spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs with a dominant 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire at Geodis Park, with goals from Sam Surridge, Cristian Espinoza, and Hany Mukhtar smothering the Fire as Nashville win their 12th out of 13 matches at home in MLS play.

The vibe check (TL;DR)

• What happened: Nashville were ascendant in the first half, and then weathered a really tricky period in the second half in which Chicago built pressure and looked set to equalize. The 'Yotes took full control of the match late in the game and were fully deserving of the win.
• What we learned: This was one of the most complete performances from Nashville in 2026. Against a good Fire team, the Boys In Gold were a class above. They've been completely dominant at Geodis Park, taking 37 from a possible 39 points at home this season.

• 11' | Brian Schwake comes off his line aggressively to cut out a through ball. He doesn't get caught out, but Nashville's defense has to scramble to block the ensuing shot on an open goal.

Standout performers

• Cristian Espinoza was the man of the match, a crucial piece of Nashville's dominant right flank. His goal came at a vital time to seal the win, and minutes later capped it off with a driving run and assist for Mukhtar to add a bonus goal. He's up to 21 goal contributions in his first season, already good for ninth all-time in Nashville history.
• Sam Surridge continued his form from Miami. Not only did he open the scoring, but he was more involved from the run of play, showing off a rarely-seen passing range and an ability to unlock the defense.
• Matt Corcoran and Patrick Yazbek were both hugely important in Nashville's ability to control the game with the ball. They had a lot of work to do defensively, but also were incredibly mature in their understanding of when to push the tempo and when to slow things down. Both played excellent entry passes to set up goals.

There were no surprises in the lineup for Nashville. Elias Saad returned to the XI, while Matt Corcoran partnered Patrick Yazbek in midfield.
