“Uniquely Nashville.”
Those words have followed BJ Callaghan around since the day he was announced as Nashville SC's head coach in 2024. But what does it mean, really? Because when it comes to sports in this city, representing Nashville usually doesn’t mean winning a big game. It doesn’t mean winning trophies, and it certainly doesn’t mean exceeding – or even meeting – expectations.
Nashville can be a city of false hope and broken dreams. A place where musicians around the world come hoping to make it big, only to fall just short. Cruelly, the city's sports teams tend to mirror this as well. One cannot tell the story of the Tennessee Titans without also mentioning Kevin Dyson coming devilishly close to scoring in Super Bowl XXXIV. The Predators experienced this heartbreak in the Stanley Cup Final in 2017. Even Nashville SC got in on the action, bowing out after a startling 11 rounds of penalties in the 2023 Leagues Cup Final.
Every team has had its moment over the years, but when push has come to shove, everyone knew the script. Nashville loses.
This all changed on October 1, 2025.
Winning leads to more winning

Nashville SC, in their first full year of a rebuild under Callaghan, made a run to the US Open Cup Final. Every supporter was excited about it, but there was still a hidden belief lurking just under the surface that it wasn’t actually going to happen; they were still going to lose.
It’s a hard thing to shake, the inability to get a crucial win over the line. As the clock wound down to its final nail-biting moments in Austin's Q2 Stadium, a realization began to dawn on everyone watching; maybe things were changing?
On a Wednesday night in Texas, that team did what no other Nashville team had ever done. They saw it out. They won the big game. They had the trophy. They were champions.
However, whether it was fair or not, that win did have some caveats. It wasn’t a league title. It wasn’t a full Open Cup field. Only MLS clubs that missed the playoffs the year prior participated, and some of the best teams in the league didn’t play at all.
Many celebrated the win, and rightfully so. But what some other loud critics were trying to say about Nashville was clear: that trophy doesn’t count. In some corners of the fanbase, this disbelief in the club persisted, especially after their 2025 MLS Cup Playoff run brutally ended at the hands of Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, yet another time that Nashville had failed to slay the dragon.
A club with a chip on its shoulder

Nashville has a fanbase that has always had a chip on its shoulder. This team was never supposed to be here in the first place.
It feels like ancient history now, but the DNA of the current MLS team begins in the amateur league NPSL. Not only was the club never supposed to be in MLS, it was never even supposed to be in the NPSL. It began with a merger with previously unrelated Nashville Atlas to start the first season in 2014.
Then, just over a decade ago, a group of investors approached the member-run and member-owned operation then known as Nashville Football Club with an opportunity to join forces to move into the professional ranks in the USL.

While this was going on, a separate Major League Soccer ownership group had begun to pick up steam in the city. While these groups ultimately came together under the banner of Nashville Soccer Club, MLS, though, remained a long shot. So much of a long shot, in fact, that one publication ranked Nashville’s bid chances as 12th out of the 12 teams vying for spots in the league.
It was the work on the ground, and the work lobbying in Metro offices, that led to a stadium deal and the welcoming of Nashville to MLS. While anticipation was high in Nashville, doubts about the success of the team continued to rain on the club’s parade from all over the country’s soccer commentariat. This criticism persisted through two years in USL and well into the first season in MLS. Nobody, it seemed, believed in the project in Nashville, and every success was also followed with a “yes, but…”

Following the disappointing end to last season, as far as a lot of people were concerned, it was back to business as usual in the Music City.
A different Nashville SC

Unfortunately for those critics, it turned out that this Nashville team was different.
While it’s fair to say that some expectations were placed upon NSC this season, there’s probably not one soul outside the team’s training facility in Antioch that expected this team to deliver what it has this year. The Boys in Gold are Supporters' Shield champions and favorites to lift the MLS Cup in December. With 70 points already earned, the club’s 2026 campaign has been one of the best seasons in the history of the league.
They don’t just beat teams either. They crush them, they grind them into dust, especially at Geodis Park. A high-priced Miami squad with the best player in the history of the game? 4-1. Thanks for playing.
This has happened repeatedly all season. The performance levels and consistency have been unimpeachable. Something to be proud of.
"Uniquely Nashville"

Perhaps what Callaghan meant when he envisioned this club as “uniquely Nashville” was that he was trying to build a team that could specifically answer the questions that have plagued the city’s sports teams for years.
It feels like the club has defeated the lurking imposter syndrome. The chip on the shoulder of the city. The insecurity the fanbase has felt in big games. In 2026, they have systematically taken out all those years of frustration on as many clubs as humanly possible over the course of one season.
